History & Origin

About 460 years ago this area was a thick forest beside the river Sabarmati. An itinerant sadhu Shree Hanumandasji found this jungle area suitable for his stay and laid his deity's idol of Rambhakt Maruti, which is worshipped till this day.

His successor sadhu Shree Sarangdasji received a vision from Lord Jagannath to install the idols of the Holy Trinity — Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Baldevji and sister Goddess Subhadraji. Thus the Maruti temple became Shree Jagannathji Mandir.

The fourth Mahant Shree Narsinhdasji renovated the temple, established a full-fledged gaushala, and started "Sadavrat" ensuring two meals a day for the needy. In 1957 at the Sinhasth Kumbha Mela, he was honoured with the title "Mahamandaleshwar."
